What is karatai? A fusion of Shotokan style karate (empty hand) and Yang style tai chi chuan (infinite ultimate fist) and is called a hard-soft style martial art integrating meditation and healing techniques.

Karate means open hand or empty hand. see Gichin funakoshi (founder of classical shotokan style) is the father of modern day karate-do

Shotokan means hall of shoto (or pine waves hall which loosely means hall in a pine forest) where the first type of this karate style was officially, regularly practiced/taught.

Tai chi chuan means infinite ultimate fist.

Karatai
Why is Karatai different to karate or tai chi chuan?
Karate
is a hard style of martial arts that is self defense based and relies mostly
on linear striking movements with the idea that the fastest way to reach B (target) from A (attack) is in a straight line.
The "twitch" or fast reflex cells (red cells) are the cells in the muscles that are trained/focused on during karate training.
The mind and body can be pushed to the limit during karate training which can take a lot of effort to develop skills.
The fist at the end of a striking arm is taught to focus the energy of all the muscles as the body tightens on a strike (kime).
Modern day karate tends to mostly work using the muscles forgetting (the lost) internal kime (Ki "Japanese word for chi" = internal energy, kime = applying internal energy)
and meditation concepts.

Tai chi chuan is a soft style martial arts that is self defense based, it's movements are slow (slowness being the father of speed), soft, even and mostly circular.
The "twitch" or slow reflex cells (white cells) are the cells in the muscles that are trained/focused on during tai chi chuan training.
The mind is taught to focus on relaxing the muscles and to make the fist at the end of a striking arm to become like the end of whip
(but slowly) whilst meditating on the movements of the forms.
The energy at the end of the whip is lifted from an energy centre in the lower abdominal region (Dantian - Chinese, Hara/Tanden - Japanese, this energy
is draw up by the mind through practice of the movements whilst meditating on the movements and lower energy centre which is why some call tai chi chuan
meditation in movement.
Tai chi chuan tends to mostly work on or use the tendons, ligaments and connective tissues.

Karatai - therefore karatai is constructed to be internal and external - linear and circular - hard and soft - internal and external to complete slowness (yin) with the fast (yang).

Karatai meditation - students at brown belt level are instructed in meditation, Hara/Dantian acupressure techniques to help master and develop the mind, body and spirit.

Karatai students start to have tai chi grading incorporated at brown belt level completing the 8 tai chi forms at this level as well as
the normal shotokan brown belt grading curriculum.

tai chi brings balance
Why learn Karatai? the aims of karatai are to offer balance and harmony internally (soft) and externally (hard) both physically and mentally, to enhance the life of the practitioner no matter what age, gender or lifestyle that person lives. The student will learn a self-defence but the hope is they will also learn to master themselves too.

What age do students start Karatai? we advise that students start training from any age from 7 or above.

Children pay for Karatai classes and must bring 1 adult with them - Adults do not pay for any classes when accompanied
by a child up to the age of 16. Adults attending singularly pay standard club rate.
