Repulse monkey:
Standing in a bow stance extend your right hand out to the front and centre, arm slightly bent at the elbow, palm up with hand and fingers relaxed. Bring the left arm in until the hand is just in front and by the left hip palm facing up keep the hand moving back in a circle to up and round to finally move forward past the left ear (whilst stepping back).Turn the right hand over and step back with the right foot until the right toes touch the floor, move the foot from toe to heel pouring all energy into the foot and leg into a back stance whilst extending the left hand front and centre to strike forwards.
Note: When tai chi walking stepping backwards the moving foot should make a crescent/half moon shape moving in from the front up to the supporting leg and moving out to the back.
Metaphysical:
Stepping from front to back, from yang to yin. The turning of the arms in the upper yang part of the body helps energy to pushed from the back and to the front until stepping back again. These movement when practiced correctly bring balance and unity to the chi of the bodies back and front, up and down, left and right. Repulse monkey can be difficult to learn and must be practiced regularly to grasp its essence.
Possible form healing qualities:
Arthritis in the arms, shoulders, hips and knees, reviving poor memory, helping make the heart more decisive, could help stop gall-stones and pain in the ribs and ankles.
Therapy use:
Step slowly back with abdominal breath in quiet contemplation with a focused mind may encourage relief from stubborn arthritis to the hands especially if this pain becomes a muscle memory as this type of memory is associated with past events, past pain which is something that needs to be left behind. The stepping back pushing hands forwards could help to let go of this type of pain both mentally and physically, then use as a standing meditation to help with any arthritic pain relief applying the meditation techniques used in starting form.
